Student sport

The Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) fosters sustainable development of students, providing not only excellent conditions for learning, but also the possibility of continuing and developing sports passions. Science, culture and sports go hand in hand, and hence, they make the basis for the development of the academic community of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

Sports infrastructure, constantly modernized and expanded, allows students to participate in various forms of physical activity. The organisational framework of student sport is supported by the cooperation of the University and the AZS UMK Toruń (Akademicki Związek Sportowy Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu – University Sports Association Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń). The club of the AZS UMK Toruń was founded over 70 years ago, and joined the nationwide student association, becoming part of one of the largest European organizations of student athletes – the University Sports Association (Akademicki Związek Sportowy).

The University takes pride in its students and their sporting achievements. Since the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, the Toruń academics have represented the colours of Poland in international arenas. The athletic performance of the University is demonstrated by the sports results – the Olympic medal, the medals of the World, European and Polish championships. The athletes of the AZS UMK Toruń also take the highest positions at the World University Championships, European University Championships, European Students’ Games and the Academic Championships of Poland.

Academic rivalry, conducted as part of the regional academic championship and the Polish championships, stimulates student physical activity. Students can develop their sports passions in more than 20 sports sections, including the following sections: aikido, badminton, cross-country, cheerleaders, rowing ergometer, futsal, judo, WKF karate, basketball, athletics, football, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball, scuba diving, swimming, chess, table tennis, and sports climbing. The representatives of the University participate in most of the competitions of the Academic Championships of Poland, gaining higher and higher positions. The involvement of the academic community in the competitions is the reason for our pride and satisfaction with the sports results.

The University has set itself the goal of integrating people with disabilities through sports. Students have access to a wide range of sports activities aimed at people with disabilities as part of physical education courses. Academics can pursue their parasport interests in the Boccia section. Players with disabilities successfully participate in the AZS Polish Integration Championships.

The University creates perfect conditions for students to participate in competitions organized by international and Polish sports federations. Our students, competitors of the AZS UMK Toruń represent the colours of the University and Poland in international rowing championships, including the Olympic Games.
