"Olympic" competition

The rowers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University did a great job in the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta (18th-19th October) just under the walls of Harvard University. They are the first Polish crew to have competed in that prestigious race.

There were 36 crews, including 5 from Europe. The NCU rowers were: Robert Fuchs, Dariusz Juręczyk, Radosław Krymski, Szymon Kuczkowski, Karol Leszczyński, Łukasz Makowski, Łukasz Pawłowski, Daniel Trojanowki and Mirosław Ziętarski came in the fourteeth place. They were merely 34 seconds behind the winners, which was a very good result in a 4800-metre race.

The Craftsbury boat was the winning crew with Olympic rowers from various countries: Valent Sinkovic, Martin Sinkovic, Mahe Drysdale, Olaf Tufte, Ondrej Synek, Roel Braas, Julien Bahain, John Graves and Peter Wiersum. The NCU boat beat among others the crews from: the California University, Cambridge, Naval Academy, RC Berlin and Northeastern (which always trains on the River Charles).

We are happy with such a result as the NCU rowers competed in a boat they had not known, on the river they had never tried. Due to the unexpected perturbations during their journey to the USA they arrived late at the venue of the Regatta, and thus, missed the training planned for Friday, 17th October.

The NCU crew competed in the Regatta thanks to the sponsors and partners. The Consus Group has become the strategic sponsor of the crew, the PZU Życie insurance company has become a sponsor. The City Office of Toruń has taken strategic patronage over the rowers. The Marshalls Office of the Kuyavia and Pomerania Voivodeship and Mercury Hotel in Toruń have become partners of the crew. The outfits have been designed and made by Izabela Dylewska, a two-time Olympic medallist.

The NCU crew was insured by the PZU Życie. The NCU Business Incubator provides organisational support for the crew within the “More than Business" Programme.
